E conosciuto anche con altri nomi, impropri e piu rari, quali san Colombano di Luxeuil (in Francia) o san Colombano di Bobbio o san Columba il Vecchio. In gaelico e chiamato Colum. Tramite le sue numerose fondazioni contribui alla diffusione in Europa del monachesimo irlandese. Stabili una regola monastica che in seguito si assimilo a quella benedettina e fu definitivamente abrogata anche formalmente nel 1448 da papa Niccolo V. Introdusse con il Paenitentiale l'uso della confessione privata in sostituzione di quella pubblica per il sacramento della penitenza. Papa Benedetto XVI lo ha definito "santo europeo." Infatti, San Colombano stesso scrive in una lettera che gli europei devono essere un unico popolo, un "corpo solo" che viene unito da radici cristiane in cui le barriere etniche e culturali vanno superate; inoltre usa per la prima volta l'espressione latina "totius Europae." E santo patrono dei motociclisti. Colombano nacque tra il 540 e il 543 nella cittadina di Navan, nel Leinster (Irlanda centro-orientale). Secondo la leggenda agiografica della sua vita, la madre, in attesa della sua nascita, avrebbe visto un sole uscire dal suo seno per recare al mondo una grande luce.
