Mais a mon sens, jamais la philosophie ne sort de la theorie: son essence, c'est de garder, en face de tout objet qui s'offre a elle, le role du simple spectateur, du chercheur; donner des preceptes n'est pas son fait. Prendre de l'action sur la conduite des hommes, les diriger, modeler les caracteres, ce sont bien la ses pretentions du vieux temps: aujourd'hui, la philosophie, etant de sens plus rassis, fera sagement d'y renoncer. Des qu'il s'agit de dignite ou d'indignite, de salut ou de damnation, ce qui emporte la balance ce ne sont plus des concepts sans vie, c'est la partie intime, l'essence meme de l'homme, le demon, comme dit Platon, le demon qui le conduit, et non pas malgre lui: le demon de son choix; c'est, pour parler avec Kant, son caractere intelligible.
