Du petit jardin endormi, de la maisonnette aux volets clos, de l'interieur confortable et bourgeois trahi par ce rectangle de lumiere, se degageait un calme de petite ville, un calme lointain, familial. Et Onesime Coche, en qui dix annees d'existence a Paris n'avaient pu effacer completement les impressions des jours passes au fond d'une province, le souvenir des longues soirees d'hiver, des rues silencieuses ou l'on entend par les soirs de printemps, lorsque le bois travaille, craquer les auvents des maisons et les poutres des toits, demeura un instant immobile devant cette porte qui se refermait.
