Fue fundado por Fidel Cano Gutierrez el 22 de marzo de 1887 en la ciudad de Medellin. En 2007 cumplio 120 anos de existencia, siendo el periodico mas antiguo en Colombia, uno de los mas antiguos de America y el de mayor trayectoria en la historia del pais. Debe su nombre a la gran admiracion que su fundador le tenia al poeta Victor Hugo, quien colaboraba en Francia en un diario que llevaba ese nombre. En sus inicios el periodico se publicaba dos veces por semana -martes y viernes- en una edicion de cuarto de pliego de 500 ejemplares; anos despues se convertiria en diario y en 2001, tras una crisis economica, en semanario. El Espectador, en formato impreso, volvio a ser diario a partir del 11 de mayo de 2008. En su primer numero se definio a si mismo como un periodico politico, literario, noticioso e industrial.
