Especialmente conocido por su actividad artistica, su obra ejercio una fuerte influencia en la evolucion del movimiento pop en el siglo XX. Al igual que este, abomino de la sedimentacion simbolica en las obras artisticas como consecuencia del paso del tiempo, y exalto el valor de lo coyuntural, lo fugaz y lo contemporaneo. Duchamp es uno de los principales valedores de la creacion artistica como resultado de un puro ejercicio de la voluntad, sin necesidad estricta de formacion, preparacion o talento. Nacio el 28 de julio de 1887 en Blainville-Crevon, un pequeno pueblo donde su padre, Eugene Duchamp, ejercia como notario y alcalde. Fue el tercero de seis hermanos. Sus dos hermanos mayores, que adoptaron mas tarde los nombres de Raymond Duchamp-Villon y Jacques Villon, decidieron dedicarse al arte, quizas debido a la influencia de su abuelo materno, que tras ganar una fortuna considerable como agente maritimo se habia retirado para dedicarse a sus principales aficiones, el grabado y la pintura, llegando a exponer algunas obras en la Exposicion Universal de Paris (1878).
