Sore griev'd my heart such ruin'd scenes to view; And more I griev'd myself could nothing do, Whilst in this humble sphere consiu'd I stood, To raise one arch up for the public good. As once upon its brink I sadly mus'd, The water and its finny breed perus'd, That flouncing through the deep did nimbly go, And glitter'd through the blue prosound below, I gaz'd; but sound my heart with sorrow press'd, Which thus in plaintive numbers I express'd. Ye Naiads! gentle guardians of the deep, Whose eyes a watchsul observation keep, Attend, Attend, lest, heedless of the dang'rous way, Some hapless stranger rashly fall a prey; Some reeling drunkard, careless of his fame, Sink down, and with his fall pollute thy stream.
