Non c'e chiarezza sulle modalita dell'esecuzione di Mussolini e Claretta Petacci intorno al 28 aprile 1945, nei pressi di Giulino di Mezzegra, circa 20 km a sud di Dongo: la circostanza continua ad alimentare polemiche e congetture tanto fra i simpatizzanti del fascismo, quanto fra gli oppositori, mentre fra gli storici e i giuristi si dibatte ancora, oltre che sulla qualificabilita dell'atto come esecuzione di una condanna a morte irrogata dal CLNAI o come semplice atto d'impulso, sugli eventuali moventi specifici e sugli eventuali mandanti. Fra gli storici non mancano posizioni antitetiche circa alcuni punti cui si attribuiscono spiegazioni affatto diverse, a partire dal motivo del viaggio dell'autocolonna su cui il dittatore fu catturato, che alcuni vogliono in fuga per la Svizzera, per altri era un semplice ripiegamento verso la Valtellina, mentre per altri doveva recarsi appositamente ad un appuntamento proprio a Dongo. Croce marcante il luogo, a Giulino di Mezzegra, dove Mussolini fu uccisoGli elementi storicamente certi della vicenda, per tali intendendosi quelli che all'attendibilita delle versioni affiancano la non probabilita di ipotesi contrarie, sono davvero pochi. Nel tentativo di sfuggire alla disfatta definitiva della Repubblica Sociale Italiana, Mussolini si reca a Milano per trattare la resa con la mediazione del cardinale di Milano Ildefonso Schuster...
