Not illustrated. 1883 Excerpt: ...the lower parts of the frames opposite to each other are to be lapped and rivetted together, and in all vessels to extend to the gunwale. Where either raised quarter decks, poops, or forecastles are constructed, the frames are to extend to their deck stringers respectively, except when the vessel is of a rounded form at the gunwale; they may then terminate at the lower edge of the curve. When the frames are butted on the keel (except when centre through-plate keels are adopted) they are not to have less than 3-feet lengths of corresponding angle iron, fitted back to back, to cover and support the butts, and receive the plating for at least three-fourths the vessel's length amidships. Similar pieces of angle iron are to be fitted, if the frames are butted elsewhere. The rivet holes in the frames must be properly divided prior to punching; for single-rivetted laps, the lap being 2% inches broad, the holes on each side of the lap may be 5 inches from the centre of the lap for-inch rivets, and the holes between the laps spaced about eight diameters; for double laps of plating, from the centre of lap to the hole in frame above the lap, may be 6 inches to centre, and the hole below the lap may be 5 inches from centre of lap, and the holes between the laps on frame spaced eight diameters as nearly as possible. The heels of frames bearing over the keel should be nicely fitted, butting closely together, and within the limits of the width of the keel, but having a full bearing and fair with the keel, otherwise secure work with the garboard strakes will not be made; those frames resting on the stem and stern posts must likewise be carefully fitted, having a full bearing. The inside flange of the frame must be punched to suit the size of the reverse angle-iron frames, ...
