About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1888 Excerpt: ...of steady currents is something like 30,000 volts per centimetre. This gives some approach to a general principle. If a flash of lightning were 500ft. long, aud varied directly as the striking distance, then Oliver Lodge's measurements, given iir his papers, would be fairly accurate. But there is every rcas-m to believe that the striking distance does not vary directly as the distance: alternate currents are modifying our conceptions in every direction. There is a Mr. Acheson in America who has been making some very careful observations on striking distance ac.ro s air. His currents arc produced by transformers, and there he makes out that the.striking instance varies, uot directly as to E.M.F., but as the cube of tho E.M.F. If that be so, then it will follow that the E.M.F. forcing a current of electricity through tho air and producing a flash is very much less than we have hitherto considered it to be. And, again, a flash of lightning always goes aloug a path that has been prepared for it. A flash of lightning does not go fooling about waiting for a convenient house to strike; it does uot come down in a rush on every flagstaff and telegraph pole. We have ample evidence that wherever lightning flows there some preparation has been made for its approach. Next, there is the assumption, and I consider it a fallacy, that a flash of lightning is instantaneous. We all know of the experiments that are made to show revolving wheels--the spokes suddenly appear before us fixed whenever a spark passes, and we most of us believe that the flash is really instantaneous; but there is no proof. All we know is that the flash is merely a flash of light, and that it indicates the path. How long the current lasts we cannot tell. There are dark and invisible flashes, as we may...
