About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 Excerpt: ...of vertical components, the direction of the vertical component becomes known, the direction of the total stress in the diagonal becomes evident. Since the algebraic sum of the external forces on either side of a given section is the shear at that section of a beam or truss, the vertical component of the diagonal stress, in trusses with parallel chords, is equal to the shear, and shear x Sec. 6 is the general expression for the stress in such diagonals. Stresses in Verticals. Fig. 149 shows a free body cut off from the truss, from which the stress in U2 L2 can be found. Since the sum of the vertical components of all forces on the free body equals zero, we can write: -5/3P-S4 = 0 from which S4 can be found. The hip vertical J can not be cut by a plane passing en-. tirely through the truss without cutting another member whose stress has a vertical component. Fig. 150 shows the free body from which the stress in can he found. Since Se and S8 have no vertical components it is evident that for equilibrium S7 must equal 2/3P. In a similar manner the stress in U3 L3 of the truss in Pig. 146 is shown to be equal to 1/3P. General Rule for Stresses in Verticals. Pass the cutting plane so that the free body shall have only one unknown force with a vertical component, and that the one whose stress is desired. Placing the sum of the vertical components of all forces on the free body equal to zero, the required stress can be found. In the following problems sketch the free body neatly for each stress found, placing arrows at the ends of the members cut. Where the stress in a diagonal is sought show (both by an arrow and by figures) the vertical component of the stress in the diagonal. Use great care to show the arrows in the proper direction.
