The Obfervator having now ferved his chief purpofe, of difplaying his polemic talents, and fhewn, to what length he could hold up the debate, is content at laft, to give up the main point, which he had feemingly been contending for, and to grant the whole, of what the Author of the Introductory Difcourfe can be concerned about. For he declares, " that when " the Apoftles died the whole fyftem, of faith -c was fealed up and complete: and as no other cc faith was afterwards to be admitted, fo, if no " miracles had afterwards been wrought, the -c foundation would have been equally fecure, -c fince the old miracles are fufHcient for the old -e doctrines." # And in another place he adds thefe words; " fay the worft you can fay, " (and more, I am perfuaded, than will ever be cc proved to be true) that there is not fo much " as one miracle upon record, fince the days of " the Apoftles, that is fufficiently attefted: " what has Chriftianity to do with this? No-c thing. For Chriftianity ftands not upon cc the new miracles, but upon the old." w But tho' this be true; I muft put him however in mind of what he ought to have intimated at the fame time, that it is true onely, with regard to that Chriftianity, which is profefled by Proteftants; whereas Popijh Chriftianity y which pofleffes much the largeft mare of the Chriftian world, would be undone at once, if the authority of the primitive Fathers and primitive miracles mould be rejected in common by all Chriftians. -...
