Se on pinta-alaltaan Yhdysvaltain suurin kaupunki. Sitkan asukasluku on kuitenkin vain vajaat 9 000 henkea, milla se on Alaskan neljanneksi vakirikkain kaupunki. Nimi Sitka tulee tlingitin kielen sanasta Sheet'ka, joka on supistuma nimesta Shee At'ika - "kansa Sheen ulkopuolella." Aluetta asuttivat alun perin tlingit-intiaanit (kolo it). Ensimmaisen venalaisen siirtokunnan, Arkkienkeli Mikaelin linnoituksen, paikkakunnalle perusti Aleksander Baranov vuonna 1799. Baranov oli johtanut venalaisten toimintaa alueella vuodesta 1791 ja oli samana vuonna 1799 perustetun, keisari Paavali I: n valtuuttaman Venalais-amerikkalaisen kauppakomppanian kuvernoori. Tlingitit tuhosivat Baranovin perustaman linnoituksen kuitenkin vuonna 1802 ja surmasivat suurimman osan venalaisista asukkaista.
