The lungs form two organs, the right one having 3 lobes, the left 2 (marked by deep fissures): the organs being conical at the top, rise into the neck, their concave bases resting on the convexity of the Diaphragm. They serve to admit and distribute--through the Trachea and bronchial tubes--atmospheric air, for the aeration of the blood, and to expel from the system excrementitious matter. Lesson 19. LUNGS: TKACHEA: BRONCHI: CILIA. 109 2. Q. What is the Structure of the Trachea? A. The Trachea or Wind-pipe--i to 6 inches long by 3-4ths of an inch wide--consists of the Larynx, the Trachea, and the Bronchi, the upper part being attached to the back of the tongue. Below the larynx, the wind-pipe consists of a tough outer fibrous membrane, an inner coat of" ciliated epithelium" and a middle coat of unstriped muscular fibre: except to the extent of l-3rd its diameter--at the back--the tube is protected by from 16 to 20 rings of Cartilage/which serve tokeepitalways open. The rings are continued in the bronchi, and their branches, and run all round these tubes, but become less and less as the tubes thin, ceasing entirely when their diameters measure about l-8th of an inch (Fig. 12, o.d., Fig. 13, 8,4, e; Less. 2).
