(See Coproiites and Brick returns.) cliffs at Hunstanton, near Lynn; while in the latter county the Upper Chalk is worked in the neighbourhood of Newmarket, and the Lower Chalk at Dullingham and Isteham. It should also be stated, in connexion with this subject, that the Upper Chalk approaches near to the surface at various parts of Essex and Suffolk, but nowhere sufficiently near to be worked at any other parts than those named. It is, perhaps, also worth noting that bands of imperfect sandstone, cemented principally with iron, are occasionally met with in the valley sides of the Stour and other principal rivers of Suffolk. Extensive bands of septaria have also been laid bare along the sea coast of both Essex and Suffolk, which were used extensively in the ancient buildings of the district. At Harwich, also, it is probably worth noting that the Upper Chalk was reached by borings at 70 feet bc!ow.sca level, which merged into the lower dark chalk at 500 feet, and was passed through at 970 feet, where the Upper Green-sand was met with, which was only 10 feet thick, when the gault was reached and passM through at 102 feet, when a hard slaty rock was struck upon, with a line of cleavage, of an unknown thickness, as the boring was discontinued at a tinal depth of 1,070 feet. beds, are worked In many parts of the county, but merely for local purposes.
