Extracto: Numancia es el nombre de una desaparecida poblacion celtibera situada sobre el Cerro de la Muela, en Garray, a 7 km. al norte de la actual ciudad de Soria, Espana. En el ano 153 a. C. tiene el primer conflicto grave con Roma, al dejar entrar en la ciudad a unos fugitivos de la tribu de los bellos, procedentes de la ciudad de Segeda (actualmente sus restos estan situados entre Mara y Belmonte de Gracian ). Los numantinos, al mando de Caro de Segeda, consiguen derrotar a un ejercito de 30.000 hombres mandados por el consul Quinto Fulvio Nobilior, pero hubo que lamentar que su jefe, Caro, muriera en la batalla. Tras veinte anos repeliendo los continuos e insistentes ataques romanos, en el ano 133 a. C., el senado romano confiere a Publio Cornelio Escipion Emiliano El Africano Menor la labor de destruir Numancia, a la que finalmente pone sitio, levantando un cerco de 9 km. apoyado por torres, fosos, empalizadas, etc. Tras 13 meses de hambrunas, enfermedades y tras agotarse sus viveres, los numantinos deciden poner fin a su situacion. Algunos de ellos se entregan en condicion de esclavos al ejercito de Publio Cornelio Escipion Emiliano, mientras que la gran mayoria de los numantinos decidieron suicidarse, prevaleciendo su condicion de libertad frente a la esclavitud de Roma. Calle de la Numancia romana, con una de las domus del barrio sur.No esta muy claro si era una ciudad que pertenecia al pueblo de los pelendones o de los arevacos. En este sentido, Plinio el Viejo afirma que es una ciudad pelendona, aunque otros autores, como Estrabon y Ptolomeo, la situan entre los arevacos.
