Vevey, Suiza, 25 de diciembre de 1977), fue un actor comico, compositor, productor y director cinematografico y escritor ingles mejor conocido por sus populares interpretaciones durante la epoca del cine mudo. Desde entonces, es considerado como una de las figuras mas representativas del humorismo. Reconocido por su popular personaje Charlot, se destaco en cine desde principios de la decada de 1910 hasta los anos 1950. Filmo alrededor de noventa peliculas, entre ellas Kid Auto Races at Venice (1914), La quimera del oro (1925), Luces de la ciudad (1931), Tiempos modernos (1936) y El gran dictador (1940). Fue uno de los cofundadores de la United Artists en 1919, junto con Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks y David Griffith. Influenciado por el frances Max Linder, su carrera artistica abarco mas de siete decadas y recibio un premio de la Academia en 1928. Candidato al premio Nobel de la Paz en 1948, abandono Estados Unidos tras una serie de polemicas que lo involucraron con el comunismo y con la realizacion de actividades antiestadounidenses. En sus ultimas decadas, sus trabajos disminuyeron pero se lo pudo apreciar en La condesa de Hong Kong y Un rey en Nueva York. Casado en cuatro ocasiones, sus hijos Geraldine, Josephine y Sydney Chaplin tambien se dedicaron al espectaculo.
