La frequence adoptee pour les alternateurs Westinghouse est de 60 periodes par seconde. Il se construit divers modeles ayant respectivement une puissance de 45, 60, 75, 150 et 250 kilowatts. La Compagnie Westinghouse construit egalement des alternateurs polyphases dont la figure 219 montre une vue d'ensemble. L'inducteur fixe, de construction identique a celui des alternateurs ordinaires, comporte, suivant la puissance de la machine, 8, 10 ou 12 electro-aimants pour les alternateurs diphases et 12 pour les triphases. Comme dans les alternateurs ordinaires, les inducteurs des machines polyphases sont pourvus d'un enroulement supplementaire (fig. 218V Le courant qui passe dans cet enroulement est fourni par l'alternateur lui-meme. A cet effet, on intercale un petit transformateur diphase ou triphase (I) sur les conducteurs reliant l'enroulement de l'induit aux bagues collectrices; le secondaire de ce transformateur est relie a un commutateur redresseur, place sur l'arbre de l'induit, et alimente l'enroulement supplementaire du systeme inducteur. On realise ainsi un compoundage qui permet de faire varier l'excitation suivant la charge de l'alternateur...."
