After considering the various events of this most important night, and comparing the periods at which it is authenticated that the different services were performed, it appears consistent with truth to arrive at the following conclusions: In the first place, had Lord Wellington alone relied upon the ordinarymode of assault, that of OBSERVATIONS ON THE ASSAULT. storming the breaches, ' the town would not have been taken. Had General Leith received the ladders, and escaladed soon after 10 o'clock as was intended, he would have been equally successful, and have saved the divisions contending for entrance at the breaches, upwards of an hour of continued and tremendous loss. Had he not escaladed at all, Badajos must have fallen in consequence of the castle being carried by the 3d division, but not until the following day, when the enemy might have given farther trouble. Had the attack by General Picton failed, still the success of the 5th division ensured the fall of the place. It was consequently the escalade of the bastion of San Vicente that occasioned the immediate reduction of the fortress. Of the British troops employed in the assault, the light division had fifty-eight oflicers, and eight hundred and sixty-eight men; the 3d division, fifty oflicers, and four hundred and thirty-four men; the 4th, ninety-one oflicers, and eight hundred and forty-four men; and the 5th division, thirtysix oflicers, and five hundred and nine men, killed or wounded.
