Not illustrated. 1844 Excerpt: ...letter herewith, marked E. It has been my wish to submit this letter to you at an earlier day, because of my anxious wish for timely action on the bill. But, in addition to the unavoidable delay incident to the procuring of information from the Land Office, in written form, (always, however, as promptly furnished as possible! my request, ) I have been greatly disappointed in not having before me the annual report of the Commissioner, made at the present session. This document is yet in the hands of the printer, on inquiry of whom, this morning, I learn that many days will elapse before it can be prepared for distribution. Thus situated, and being unwilling to lose more time, I felt it my duty to look over the manuscripts in his hands, to inform myself of the transactions of the past year having relation to this subject. In examining the report of the Commissioner, I have yet to say, that these Michigan frauds craim no part of his attention, while he indulges in a language of becoming denunciation, of severe and just censure, in allusions p "disgusting details of profligate combinations and official delinquencies;" of "errors of surveys, fictitious field notes, and of course false returns in the diagrams and plats," elsewhere. The surveyor general, however, whose annual communication is subjoined, in detailing the operations under his direction during the past season, speaks of the correction and completion of certain defective surveys in certain townships (in part the subject of these fraudulent returns) he had been instructed to put under contract.
