But the destruction of the egg-masses wherever oocurring about orchards is to be recommended as calculated to prevent outbreaks calling for much spraying. _ THE FALL WEB-WORM. (H yphantria cunea). A caterpillar of medium size, clothed with rather long, soft hairs, and with a broad black area extending the whole length along the back. Produces loose webs, enclosing twigs and leaves, on various trees and shrubs, most numerous in the latter part of summer. The adult is a small white moth or miller. The fall web-worm is always present in Kentucky, but now and then attracts general attention from its large numbers and the severity of its injuries. It was especially common in Kentucky in 1890, when it was finally attacked by a parasitic-fungus (Empusa sp.) which left the dead caterpillars sticking everywhere, to fence posts, rails, weeds, and other objects, to which the restless worms wandered after the fungus attacked them. The species has not since then been so common until 1907, when in some sections of I eastern, middle, and western Kentucky, it became troublesome in orchards and about dwellings on shade trees. It gave special trouble in the fruit growing sections of Hardin and Meade Gounties. The webs made by the caterpillars are loose affairs scattered about over the trees, mostIoften among the smaller twigs at the ends of branches. They are not placed in the larger forks as a rule, like the close-spun webs of the tent caterpillar, and the caterpillars do not leave them to feed, avoiding this necessity by enclosing fresh leaves as those already enclosed are devoured.
