He makes his little speech, plays a few selections to prove his argument for good music, demonstrates that the playing of masters of the piano actually can be brought into the homes of the people--and then, as a sort of afterthought, explains that the piano he is using is the "marvelous Ampico." In the course of a week, Souvaine, Gordon and Cooper, traveling in different parts of the country, spending a day or two days or the entire week in each city and appearing before one or two or three organizations in each place, reach two or three or five or six thousand persons. Occasionally one of them is able to broaden the scope of his activities and reach a much bigger audience. In Detroit, for instance, thanks to the managerial efforts of C. H. Kessler, head of the piano department of the J. L. Hudson Music Store, Gordon played for a week this last winter in the newly opened Capitol Theater. He was a "special added attraction," a concert pianist playing solo numbers to the accompaniment of the theater orchestra. But he shared his honors with his piano. In each number he permitted the piano to play passages alone. The audiences buzzed with interest. In the course of the week some 60,000 Detroit theater-goers heard Gordon and his piano.
