Auszug: Die Schlacht bei Waterloo (auch Schlacht bei Belle-Alliance) vom 18. Juni 1815 war die letzte Schlacht Napoleon Bonapartes. Sie fand ca. 15 km sudlich von Brussel in der Nahe des Dorfes Waterloo statt. Die Niederlage der von Napoleon gefuhrten Franzosen gegen die alliierten Truppen unter General Wellington und die mit ihnen verbundeten Preuen unter Feldmarschall Blucher beendete Napoleons Herrschaft der Hundert Tage und fuhrte mit dessen endgultiger Abdankung am 22. Juni 1815 zum Ende des Ersten Franzosischen Kaiserreichs. Nach dieser zweiten volligen militarischen Niederlage innerhalb kurzer Zeit wurden Frankreich im Zweiten Pariser Frieden verscharfte Friedensbedingungen auferlegt und Napoleon selbst wurde als Kriegsgefangener der Briten auf die Atlantikinsel St. Helena gebracht, wo er als Verbannter am 5. Mai 1821 starb. Die Redewendung "Sein Waterloo erleben" als Synonym fur eine totale Niederlage hat ihren Ursprung in dieser Schlacht. Napoleon ubernahm das Oberkommando uber die Armee, aber er konnte nicht mehr auf seine alte Mannschaft zuruckgreifen. Marschall Louis Alexandre Berthier, sein ehemaliger Generalstabschef, war tot, den Marschall Joachim Murat sah er als Verrater an. Andere Marschalle weigerten sich zu dienen, entweder aus Altersgrunden oder weil sie Ludwig XVIII. einen Treueeid geleistet hatten.
