Excerpt: The feminist art movement refers to the efforts and accomplishments of feminists internationally to make art that reflects women's lives and experiences, as well as to change the foundation for the production and reception of contemporary art. It also sought to bring more visibility to women within art history and art practice. Corresponding with general developments within feminism, and often including such self-organizing tactics as the consciousness-raising group, the movement began in the 1960s and flourished throughout the 1970s as an outgrowth of the so-called second wave of feminism. It has been called "the most influential international movement of any during the postwar period" and its effects continue to the present. One of the first feminist art classes in the United States was started at Fresno State University in the fall of 1970, lead by artist Judy Chicago, who was a visiting artist at the university, teaching 15 students. The 15 students, which formed the Feminist Art Program, included Susan Boud, Dori Atlantis, Gail Escola, Vanalyne Green, Suzanne Lacy, Cay Lang, Karen LeCocq, Jan Lester, Chris Rush, Judy Schaefer, Henrietta Sparkman, Faith Wilding, Shawnee Wollenman, Nancy Youdelman, and Cheryl Zurilgen. The group would rent and refurbish an off-campus studio space, which was located on at 1275 Maple Avenue in downtown Fresno.
