Der Entstehungszeitraum wird zwischen Herbst 1946 und Januar 1947 angenommen. Am 13. Februar 1947 wurde es erstmals als Horspiel vom Nordwestdeutschen Rundfunk ausgestrahlt, am 21. November 1947 folgte die Urauffuhrung als Theaterstuck in den Hamburger Kammerspielen. Das Drama blieb neben einigen Kurzgeschichten das Hauptwerk Wolfgang Borcherts, der einen Tag vor der Urauffuhrung im Alter von 26 Jahren verstarb. Im Zentrum der Handlung steht der deutsche Kriegsheimkehrer Beckmann, dem es nach dreijahriger Kriegsgefangenschaft nicht gelingt, sich wieder ins Zivilleben einzugliedern. Wahrend er noch durch die Erfahrungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs gepragt ist, haben seine Mitmenschen die Vergangenheit langst verdrangt. Auf den Stationen seiner Suche nach einem Platz in der Nachkriegsgesellschaft richtet Beckmann Forderungen nach Moral und Verantwortung an verschiedene Personentypen, Gott und den...
