About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter iii. the joy of grief. Whom the heart of man shuts out, Sometimes the heart of God takes in.--(lowell.) "Mourning only lasts till morning with the children of the morning." We have passed the Wicket-gate of Poverty and the joys begin in orderly sequence and widening beauty. They are making to the noontide of their day. The initial beatitude of poverty is opening into the tenfold creation which is to be the joy of joys. Like a rare flower, it is slowly unfolding, and will by and by be complete. "These things have I spoken unto you that your joy might be Full." Three threes, like pearls on a golden thread, are attached to this inaugural beatitude. The present three might be fittingly called the Beatitudes of the Within. They concern our life towards God, our being rather than our doing. They are the passive three. They are the heart and center of those to come, the soul going forth into a symmetrical body of activities. The neverfailing order is from the centers to the borders of being. Nothing in the "Word is at random, nothing is loosely arranged; everything is just where it ought to be, and is as true and unerring as God can make it. Confusion, if there be any, is in the mind, and not a reality. "Mourners" are the very last whom the world would call blessed or happy. The word seems at first like some discordant note in the mortal music. No such idea was ever conceived until He came who made the heart and knew its workings. Earth has ever regarded sorrow as misfortune, and so still regards it; but it is here tabulated in another column, and ranked among the supreme experiences that add height and breadth to human living. It holds no inferior position in the Decalogue of Rapture. Let us get down to the genesis of this expression...
