Mit Vergnugen betrachten wir die zierlichen Schriftzuge und den reichen Arabeskenschmuck jener Troilushandschrift, die Johanns Enkel, der spatere Sieger von Azincourt, als Prinz von Wales in Besitz hatte, und gern vergegenwartigen wir uns dabei, wie dasselbe Gedicht, welches den Helden zur Zeit seiner ausgelassenen Jugend begeisterte, auch auf den gruen Sanger dieses Helden, auf Shaksvere einen machtigen Eindruck gemacht hat. Es ist nicht zu verwundern, wenn Sidney, der die hohe Mission der Dichtkunst mit edler Warme schilderte zur Zeit, wo das groe Zeitalter der englischen Poesie sich eben morgenruthlich ankundigte, mit Bewunderung auf den Tichter des Troilus blickt, der in einem so finstern Jahrhundert mit solcher Sicherheit den rechten Weg gefunden habe.
