Il insista sur le fait que toute mesure prise contre les Jesuites souleverait de vives resistances et entrainerait peutetre la guerre civile. Il prevoyait ce qui arriva et il cherchait a tourner la difficulte pour eviter la violence et l'effusion du sang.
