Excerpt: ...reduced and weakened, and the Pequot tribe had been deftroyed by the Connecticut fettlers in 1637; yet the country contained numerous tribes, and fufftcient to exterminate the infant fettlements, if they chofe to unite and take up the hatchet. The colonies were alfo expofed to the Dutck. For the greater fecurity therefore the four colonies united in 1643, i1 articles of confederation, by which they agreed to fuccor, aid and fupport each other, and to maintain the independence of each. Annual meetings of their commiffioners were to be held at Bofton, Hartford, New-Haven, and Plymouth in rotation. The charges of wars for the common defence were to be affeffed on each colony, according to the number of males between fixteen years old and fixty. Mafladmfetts was to furnifh one hundred foldiers and each of the others forty five; or in that proportion. This union vas 6f great utility to the infant fettlements, for thirtyiive years. 339. Charter and Union of Connecticut and New A. Haven. In the war between the commonwealth ot England, under Cromwell and the Dutch, in 1653, Capt. Underbill, by virtue of a commiffion from England, took pofleffion of the Dutch property in Haitford, and the lands were fold. After the reftoratior, of King Charles II. the Conne&icut planters, by John Winthrop, their agent, petitioned for a charter, which was granted and dated April 14, 1662. The territory granted and confirmed to them was bounded bv Narraganfet Bay on the eafl, by Maflachufetts on the north, onthefouthby the fea, and extended to the fouth fea on the weft. By this charter the fettlers were incorporated into a body politic, with ample powers ol government. But the charter comprehended the New Haven colony and was obtained without their confent;...
