Their Endings.--The general diminutive endings are: -ito, -ico, -illo, -uelo-cito, -cico, -cilio, -zuelo-ecito, -ecico, -ecillo, -ezuelo-cecito, -cecico, -cecillo, -cezuelo Occasional endings are: -ejo, -ijo, -in, -ete, -ezno, -ucho Remark.--Diminutives are inflected as to the gender and number. 2. How They Are Subjoined.--They are immediately subjoined to the word when this ends in a consonant or in-y; otherwise, they replace the last vowel of the word: animal, animalito, casa, casita cajon, cajoncito, paseo, paseito flor, florecita, mano, manecita buey, bueyecito, cordera, corderuela voz, vocecita, rey, reyezuelo 3. Alterations Of The Stbm Before Recisiving The Endings: (a) regular euphonic changes: --final C, g, gu and z, before receiving the diminutive ending become respectively qu, gu, gu, and c: frac, fraquecito, dress coat agua, aguita, water barca, barquito, little boat yegua, yegliecita, liltle mare fuego, fueguecito, smallfire voz, vocecita, small, aoft voice N.B.: nariz, nariguilla, dear little nose (b) other changes: diphthongs-ie, -ue, become sometimes-e, -o; endings-ia, -io drop the whole diphthong: bueno, bonito, preuy; but buenito, very good diente, dentezuelo, little tooth bestia, bestezuela, small beast Remare.--Words ending in a single accented vowel retain this vowel; those in the diphthong-io (not io) lose the diphthong: mama, mamaita armario, armarito tio, tifto papa, papaito rosario, rosarito tia, tiita pie, piececito 4.
