The story is set in the 15th century during the reign of Ottoman Empire and focuses on the life of a young Christian boy named Demetrius Askiates who is kidnapped and forced into the Janissary corps. Askiates rises through the ranks and becomes the captain of the Janissaries, the elite soldiers of the Ottoman Empire. While serving his new masters, he becomes embroiled in the political intrigue of the time, including the conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the Albanian prince, Scanderbeg. The novel also touches on the fall of Constantinople and the struggles of the Byzantine Empire against the Ottoman Empire.
