About the Book

The Grafters is a novel written by Francis Lynde, first published in 1906. The story is set in the early 20th century in the United States, and follows the lives of two brothers, Jack and Bob Orde, who are trying to make a living as lumberjacks in the forests of Michigan. The brothers are hardworking and honest, but they soon find themselves caught up in a world of corruption and deceit, as they are targeted by a group of unscrupulous businessmen known as ""the grafters"". The grafters are a ruthless gang of businessmen who will stop at nothing to make a profit, even if it means destroying the lives of others. They use their wealth and influence to manipulate the local government, and they have no qualms about using violence to get what they want. Jack and Bob find themselves in the crosshairs of the grafters when they discover a valuable stand of timber, and the grafters will do anything to get their hands on it. As the story unfolds, Jack and Bob must use all their wits and courage to fight back against the grafters and protect their livelihoods. Along the way, they are joined by a cast of colorful characters, including a tough-as-nails female journalist and a wealthy businessman who is sympathetic to their cause. Together, they take on the grafters and expose their corrupt practices, in a thrilling tale of justice and redemption. The Grafters is a classic tale of good versus evil, with a strong message about the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming odds. It is a gripping and suspenseful story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.For the moment while the train was hammering in over the switches they stood facing each other fiercely, all masks flung aside, each after his kind; the younger man flushed and battle-mad; the elder white, haggard, tremulous. Kent did not guess, then or ever, how near he came to death. Two years earlier a judge had been shot and maimed on a western circuit and since then, MacFarlane had taken a coward's precaution. Here was a man that knew, and while he lived the cup of trembling might never be put aside. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
