Extrait: Le Traite de Methuen fut signe a Lisbonne le 27 decembre 1703 entre l'Angleterre et le Portugal. Ce traite commercial prevoit que l'Angleterre peut exporter librement son textile vers le Portugal et ses colonies, le Portugal pouvant quant a lui exporter son vin vers l'Angleterre. Le nom du traite vient de l'homme politique anglais John Methuen, l'ambassadeur au Portugal qui negocia ce traite. Ce traite etait particulierement interessant pour l'Angleterre car il lui ouvrait un marche pour ses produits au debut de la revolution industrielle et rendait le Portugal economiquement dependant. Le vin portugais etait ainsi un tiers moins cher que le vin francais, ce qui entraina un boom de production du vin de porto produit au nord du Portugal. Ce traite est a la base de l'exemple de David Ricardo illustrant son concept des avantages comparatifs. Il est cite par Frederic Bastiat dans son texte Midi a quatorze heures. De ce traite decoule une dependance economique mutuelle entre ces deux pays, cette dependance amena, en outres, la France a envahir le Portugal lors des guerres napoleoniennes afin de preserver le blocus continental.
