Extrait: Le Roi Lear (en anglais, King Lear) est une tragedie en cinq actes en vers et en prose supposee avoir ete redigee entre 1603 et 1606 par William Shakespeare et creee le 26 decembre 1606 au Palais de Whitehall de Londres en presence du roi Jacques I. La piece, dont l'action est placee 800 ans avant l'ere chretienne, s'inspire entre autres de l'Historia regum Britanniae de Geoffroy de Monmouth, qui evoque la figure legendaire de Leir, roi mythique de l'ile de Bretagne a l'epoque celtique precedant la conquete romaine et de sa fille Cordelia. Elle contient une double intrigue (procede habituel chez l'auteur) dont l'action secondaire contribue a renforcer les differents moments de l'action principale. Il existe deux versions distinctes de la piece: The True Chronicle of the History of the Life and Death of King Lear and His Three Daughters (Chronique veridique de la vie et de la mort du roi Lear et de ses trois filles), publiee en in-quarto en 1608, et The Tragedy of King Lear (La Tragedie du Roi Lear), publiee dans le Premier Folio de 1623 dans une version plus adaptee au theatre. Les deux versions sont generalement editees en un seul texte, mais plusieurs editeurs modernes pensent que chaque version possede ses propres merites. Apres la Restauration anglaise, la piece est remaniee par des auteurs et des metteurs en scene qui la trouvent trop sombre et affligeante. Depuis le siecle elle est cependant regulierement donnee en exemple comme l'une des pieces les plus achevees de l'auteur, les critiques notant en particulier la veracite avec laquelle le poete exprime les souffrances humaines et les tragedies familiales.
