Extrait:, Quimper est une commune francaise de Bretagne, chef-lieu du departement du Finistere, mais seulement sa deuxieme ville pour la population, apres Brest. Elle est la capitale traditionnelle de la Cornouaille. Autrefois tres reduit en superficie, son territoire communal a ete tres agrandi a compter du 1 janvier 1960 par l'annexion des trois communes limitrophes de Kerfeunteun, Ergue-Armel et Penhars. Ses habitants sont appeles les Quimperois. Civitas Aquilonia est un nom latin de la ville atteste au siecle. Beaucoup ont suppose qu'il s'agissait du nom de la ville a l'epoque romaine, mais on ne peut rien affirmer. Le nom de la commune en breton est, mot qui signifie - confluent -, la ville ayant ete batie a la confluence de l'Odet avec le Steir et le Frout. Kemper est egalement proche du gaulois kombero- - fait de se rencontrer en un meme lieu -, qui a par ailleurs donne l'ancien francais combre, et le latin medieval combrus - abattis d'arbres barrant une riviere - (cf. encombrer, decombres). Le nom Quimper est bien entendu la forme francisee de Kemper. Sous l'Ancien Regime, la ville est communement appelee Quimper-Corentin, en reference a saint Corentin, son premier eveque. Ce qualificatif permet a l'epoque de la differencier des autres localites bretonnes portant le nom de Kemper, notamment les communes qui s'appellent aujourd'hui, en francais, Quimperle, Quemperven et Quemper-Guezennec. C'est a Quimper-Corentin que Jean de La Fontaine place sa fable du Charretier embourbe. Pendant la Revolution francaise, la commune a ete rebaptisee Montagne-sur-Odet. Le site et...
