Extrait: Etienne Marcel, ne entre 1302 et 1310 et mort a Paris le 31 juillet 1358, est prevot des marchands de Paris sous le regne de Jean le Bon. Il se retrouve a la tete du mouvement reformateur qui cherche a instaurer une monarchie francaise controlee en 1357, en affrontant le pouvoir royal exerce par le dauphin. Delegue du tiers etat, il joue un role considerable au cours des etats generaux tenus en pleine guerre de Cent Ans: ceux de 1355 avaient pour objectif le controle de la fiscalite, ceux de 1356 demandaient le prelevement de nouveaux impots et ceux de 1357 devaient regler le paiement de la rancon du roi Jean. Les Etats se revelant incapables de resoudre la crise qui accable le royaume, le dauphin Charles peut reprendre le pouvoir et sauver la couronne des Valois. Etienne Marcel meurt assassine par les bourgeois parisiens qui considerent qu'il est alle trop loin dans son opposition et qu'il pourrait livrer la ville aux Anglais. Etienne Marcel, comme Jacob van Artevelde dans le Comte de Flandre, est une personnalite issue du grand patriciat urbain proche du pouvoir qui s'est illustree par la defense des petits artisans et compagnons qui forment le gros des citadins. Pour autant, ils ne sont que les catalyseurs les plus connus d'un profond mouvement de reforme repondant a la crise du systeme feodal: aux et siecles, la noblesse et le clerge ne tiennent plus le role qui leur etait initialement imparti dans une societe a trois ordres.
