Il est tout a la fois realisateur, scenariste, dialoguiste, acteur, monteur, producteur et ecrivain, critique et theoricien du cinema. Chef de file de la Nouvelle Vague, cineaste engage apres 1968, experimentateur video dans la seconde partie des annees 1970, son uvre evolue a partir des annees 1980-1990 vers le collage poetique, faits de references, de citations et d'hommages aux maitres de l'histoire de la peinture, de la litterature, de la poesie et de la musique. Par son approche radicale, entiere et provocatrice, Jean-Luc Godard est un des cineastes les plus influents. Selon le scenariste Phil Alden Robinson, Godard aurait detruit toutes les regles cinematographiques. Jean-Luc Godard est le fils d'un medecin, Paul Godard, et d'Odile Monod issue d'une dynastie protestante industrielle et politique. Par sa mere Jean-Luc Godard est le descendant du pasteur theologien Adolphe Monod, et le cousin du compositeur Jacques-Louis Monod, du naturaliste Theodore Monod et du pasteur Frederic Monod. Apres une scolarite a Nyon, en Suisse, puis a Paris, au lycee Buffon, il s'inscrit a la Sorbonne (en 1946) en anthropologie, mais frequente plutot les cine-clubs de la capitale. Il pense un temps etre peintre, mais atteint de cleptomanie, il est meme interne en hopital psychiatrique. Il hante les cinemas du Quartier latin de Paris et noue des relations d'amitie avec Andre Bazin, ...
