Extrait: Jackson Pollock, ne le 28 janvier 1912 a Cody, dans le Wyoming, et mort accidentellement le 11 aout 1956, a The Springs (New York), est un peintre americain de l'expressionnisme abstrait, mondialement connu de son vivant. Pollock a eu une influence determinante sur le cours de l'art contemporain. Le - dripping -, qu'il a beaucoup employe de 1947 a 1950, l'a rendu celebre grace aux photos et aux films de Hans Namuth, realises dans le feu de l'action. Cette reconnaissance, tardive apres toute une vie dans la gene, a coincide avec l'emergence de New York comme nouvelle capitale mondiale de la culture, juste apres la Seconde Guerre mondiale entre 1948 et 1950. Pollock fut le premier de la troisieme vague d'artistes abstraits americains a etre enfin reconnu, le premier a - briser la glace - (selon l'expression de Willem de Kooning), en ouvrant un passage dans le milieu des collectionneurs aux autres artistes de l'ecole de New York. En 1945, Pollock epousa l'artiste peintre Lee Krasner qui a eu une influence decisive sur sa carriere et sur la valorisation de son uvre. Jackson Pollock nait dans l'Ouest americain. Il s'identifie a ces territoires peuples d'Indiens, avec leurs espaces et leur caractere indompte, sauvage. Il est le plus jeune de cinq garcons; ses freres prirent toujours soin de lui avec plus ou moins de bonheur. La famille change huit fois de domicile entre 1912 et 1928, en Californie et en Arizona notamment. Sa mere, Stella, dominatrice, surprotege son petit dernier, bien qu'elle aurait prefere avoir enfin une fille... Les initiatives de Stella ne coincident pas avec les moyens ...
