Extrait: Les Ambassadeurs - le tableau s'appelle en ralit Jean de Dinteville et Georges de Selve - est un portrait de groupe peint par Hans Holbein le Jeune, actuellement la National Gallery de Londres. C'est un des chefs-d'uvre du peintre et de la peinture en gnral. Triplement sublime, par ses rsonances historiques, par sa richesse symbolique et par son excellence plastique, il comporte un trange objet au premier plan rest longtemps mystrieux. Cette forme qui occupe le premier plan de la peinture, et que l'on nommait souvent os de seiche, est en fait l'anamorphose d'un crne humain qui fait rfrence une vanit. Jean de Dinteville (1504-1557), bailli de Troyes et seigneur de Polisy tait ambassadeur. Il existe plusieurs autres portraits de Dinteville attribus Holbein: un dessin conserv Windsor et une peinture sur bois conserve Berlin (Portrait d'un homme tenant un luth, 1534 ou 1535, Staatliche Museen, Gemldegalerie). Il existe galement de lui un portrait au crayon et sanguine de Clouet. Georges de Selve (1506-12 fvrier 1541), (fils de Jean de Selve premier prsident du parlement de Paris), vque de Lavaur, (Tarn), de 1526 (20 ans) 1540 (34 ans), tait lui aussi diplomate, Ambassadeur en Angleterre (1533), auprs de la Rpublique de Venise de 1534 1535, du pape Rome en 1536, puis Vienne, en Allemagne et en Espagne. Il a rendu une visite prive son ami Jean de Dinteville l'occasion des ftes de pques 1533, Londres, c'est cette occasion qu'a t peint le tableau.
