Forme au TPS Turku, il debute en junior elite finlandaise en 1993. L'equipe compte des ses rangs de jeunes espoirs tel que les defenseurs Sami Salo et Aki-Petteri Berg. L'equipe termine seconde derriere Ilves. La saison suivante, il poursuit son apprentissage en jouant parallelement dans la I divisioona, le second echelon national avec le Kiekko-67 Turku. Il participe avec la selection de Finlande junior au Championnat d'Europe junior avec qui il decroche la medaille d'or.
