Son pre, Misha Aznavourian, armnien n en Gorgie, tait le fils d'un cuisinier du tsar Nicolas II de Russie. Sa mre, Knar Baghdassarian, tait issue d'une famille de commerants armniens de Turquie. C'est par hasard que le petit Charles voit le jour Paris, alors que ses parents s'y trouvaient dans l'attente d'un visa pour les tats-Unis. Micha, ancien baryton, ouvre un petit restaurant armnien Paris, o il chante pour les exils d'Europe centrale. Avec sa femme, comdienne, ils lvent leurs deux enfants, Charles et sa sur ane Ada, dans une atmosphre de musique et de th[tre, au milieu des nombreux artistes qui frquentent le petit restaurant de la rue de la Huchette. C'est l'[ge de neuf ans que le jeune Aznavour (qui devint son nom de scne) dbute sa carrire de chanteur et de comdien.
