Il a recu les acclamations des critiques, tant dans son pays natal qu'a l'etranger pour son travail cinematographique tres singulier. A l'exception de son travail comme realisateur il est connu presque exclusivement sous son pseudonyme de Beat Takeshi. Depuis avril 2005, il est professeur a l'ecole universitaire des arts (Visual Arts) de T ky . Il possede sa propre societe, Office Kitano, qui a lance le Tokyo Filmex en 2000. Certains de ses premiers films sont des drames sur les yakuzas ou sur la police, remarque par les critiques pour son humour pince-sans-rire. Cinematographiquement, il est friand de plans-sequence ou rien ne semble pouvoir arriver et de scenes immediatement coupees la fin de l'action arrivee.
