Le terme latin acupunctura a t forg au sicle par un mdecin hollandais ayant sjourn au Japon, dnomm Willem ten Rhyne, partir du latin, aiguille et, piquer . C'est de ce terme latin que drive les termes franais et anglais acupuncture ou le terme allemand Akupunktur . En Inde, l'utilisation de l'acupuncture est mentionne il y a environ 5 000 ans dans l'Ayurveda (trait de mdecine ayurvdique) et elle reste utilise de nos jours en mdecine traditionnelle indienne. Plus d'un millnaire avant la Chine, on trouve en gypte antique une description de conduits parcourant le corps et transportant divers fluides (sang, eau, air, mucus...). C'tait les ruptures d'quilibre entre ces fluides qui pouvaient tre la cause de maladies.
