Extrait: L'architecture expressionniste est un mouvement architectural qui se developpa en Europe du nord pendant les premieres decennies du siecle en parallele avec l'Expressionnisme dans les arts appliques et vivants. Le terme d' architecture expressionniste decrivait a l'origine les productions avant-gardistes en Allemagne, aux Pays-Bas, en Autriche, en Tchecoslovaquie et au Danemark entre 1910 et environ 1924. Une reconsideration historique importante a etendu ce terme jusqu'a 1905 et meme plus largement pour englober le reste de l'Europe. Aujourd'hui le sens s'est encore elargi pour se referer a l'architecture de n'importe quelle epoque ou endroit qui fait preuve de quelques qualites appartenant a ce mouvement, comme la distorsion, la fragmentation ou la manifestation d'une emotion violente. Ce style fut caracterise par l'adoption encore plus tot que le Modernisme de nouveaux materiaux, d'innovation formelle et d'un inhabituel amoncellement, parfois inspire par des formes biomorphiques naturelles, parfois par les possibilites des nouvelles techniques offertes par la production en masse de briques, d'acier et de verres speciaux. Beaucoup d'architectes expressionnistes combattirent lors de la Premiere Guerre mondiale, et leur experience, combinee avec la tourmente politique et les agitations sociales qui ont suivi la revolution allemande de 1919, resulta a des perspectives utopiques et un programme socialiste romantique. Les conditions economiques ont severement limite le nombre de commandes dans le batiment entre 1914 et le milieu des annees 1920, ce qui condamna nombre des plus import...
