Sa critique du totalitarisme sovietique lui a valu les anathemes des communistes et a conduit a la brouille avec Jean-Paul Sartre. Il a ete couronne a 44 ans par le Prix Nobel de litterature en 1957 et son aura reste grande dans le monde. D'apres Bertrand Poirot-Delpech, les essais sur son oeuvre ont abonde juste apres sa mort, tandis qu'on rendait tres peu compte de sa vie.
