Extrait: Erich Fromm, ne a Francfort le 23 mars 1900 et mort a Locarno le 18 mars 1980 est un psychanalyste humaniste americain d'origine juive allemande. Il a fait ses etudes a l'universite de Heidelberg puis a celle de Munich et enfin a l'Institut psychanalytique de Berlin. C'est avec Karl Landauer notamment qu'il contribue a la creation de l'Institut psychanalytique de Francfort. Il est avec Adorno, Herbert Marcuse et d'autres, un des premiers representants de l'ecole de Francfort. Il a greffe, d'une facon critique et originale qui lui est propre, la these freudienne sur la realite sociale qui s'est fait jour dans l'apres-guerre jusqu'a l'epoque contemporaine aux Etats-Unis ou il a vecu a partir de 1934. La, il a enseigne au Bennington College, a la Columbia University, puis celle du Michigan et a Yale, et aussi aupres de l'Universite nationale du Mexique. Pour certains, Erich Fromm est un psychanalyste humaniste. Il a ete analyse par celle qui allait devenir sa femme Frieda Fromm-Reichmann et Hanns Sachs. Mais, en dehors des chapelles, Erich Fromm est bien plus connu comme un sociologue marxiste pour avoir fait la conjonction explosive de Karl Marx a Sigmund Freud. Il prone l'adaptation de la psychanalyse a la dynamique sociale a partir d'une interpretation humaniste de Marx (La peur de la liberte, 1941; L'art d'aimer, 1956; Societe alienee et societe saine, 1971).
