Extrait: Serguei Pavlovitch Korolev, egalement Koroliov ou Koroliev (12 janvier 1907 a Jytomyr, Ukraine) - 14 janvier 1966 a Moscou) est un ingenieur, pere de l'astronautique sovietique. Il est l'equivalent sovietique de Wernher von Braun. Korolev est ne a Jytomyr, ville provinciale du centre de l'Ukraine, qui fait partie a l'epoque de la Russie imperiale. Ses parents sont Maria Mykolayivna Moskalenko (Ukrainienne) et Pavel Iakovlevitch Korolev (Russe): il s'agit d'un mariage arrange et leur union n'est pas tres heureuse. Trois ans apres sa naissance, ses parents se separent en raison de difficultes financieres. Sa mere lui annonce le deces de son pere alors que celui-ci n'est survenu qu'en 1929 (il n'a jamais revu son pere apres le divorce de ses parents). Korolev grandit a Nejine, sous la garde de ses grands-parents. Sa mere voulant qu'il ait une formation superieure, il suit des cours a Kiev. C'est un enfant solitaire avec peu d'amis, mais il est bon eleve, notamment en mathematiques. En 1916, sa mere epouse Grigori Mikhailovitch Balanine, un ingenieur electricien, qui a une bonne influence sur l'enfant. Grigori ayant obtenu un emploi aux chemins de fer regionaux, la famille demenage a Odessa en 1917. L'annee 1918 est tumultueuse en Russie, avec la fin de la guerre mondiale et la Revolution russe. Les luttes intestines continuent jusqu'en 1920. Pendant cette periode, les locaux des ecoles restent fermes et le jeune Korolev doit poursuivre ses etudes a la maison.
