En 840, c'est Bernard le Poitevin qui est nomm la tte du comt, mais il ne semble contrler la ville. Il faut dire que l'empereur vient de mourir et que ses fils se dchirent pour partager l'empire. La bataille de Fontenoy-en-Puisaye, entre Lothaire I et Ppin II d'une part et Louis II le Germanique et Charles le Chauve d'autre part, conduit au trait de Verdun qui entrine le partage de l'Empire. L'Aquitaine est attribue Charles le Chauve, mais Ppin II continue la contrler et rsister Charles. Ce n'est qu'en 848 que Ppin, aprs qu'il eut abandonn Bordeaux aux Vikings, est dpos par les Aquitains qui se rallient Charles le Chauve. Bernard le Poitevin est mort depuis 844, lors de combats contre Lambert II de Nantes. Poitiers continue d'tre administre civilement et religieusement par l'vque bron, favorable Charles le Chauve. En 853, Charles le Chauve accuse Gauzbert, comte du Maine de collusion avec les Bretons, alors en rvolte, et le fait excuter.
