Roland tait le prfet des Marches de Bretagne. Le roi, futur Charlemagne, conduisit effectivement ses troupes Saragosse en Espagne la demande du w?li de la ville, Sulayman ibn al-Arabi, mais ce dernier ayant t remplac entre temps, Charles trouva les portes de la ville closes. De dpit, l'aile occidentale de l'arme franque, conduite par le roi, rasa les dfenses de la ville navarraise de Pampelune, qui avait pourtant rsist la pression musulmane. Le 15 aot 778, pour piller son ravitaillement, des Vascons insoumis dcimrent l'arrire-garde de l'arme du roi Charles, lourdement arme, alors qu'elle gravissait pniblement une valle encaisse depuis Roncevaux. Roland et quelques autres nobles y trouvrent la mort, ainsi que le comte du palais Anselme.
