Des preuves archologiques comme documentaires montrent que le Kent a d'abord t colonis par les Jutes, venus du sud de la pninsule du Jutland. Selon une lgende bien connue, deux frres, Hengist et Horsa, dbarquent en 449 comme mercenaires au service du roi breton Vortigern. Aprs une rvolte concernant leur solde, et la mort d'Horsa pendant la bataille, Hengist fonde le royaume de Kent. Ce rcit est maintenant considr par plusieurs historiens comme essentiellement lgendaire, bien qu l'histoire d'une rvolte de mercenaires semble plausible, et la date de la fondation du royaume de Kent est maintenant situe vers le milieu du sicle, en accord avec la lgende.
