Sa population tait de 247 057 habitants en 2000 selon le recensement, mais elle tait estime 311 824 en 2006 selon la mairie. C'est une des grandes villes les plus dynamiques des tats-Unis en termes d'volution de la population, ainsi que l'une des plus pollues. Bakersfield est situe 3521?26?N, 1191?54?O, une altitude de 120 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer; approximativement 160 km au nord de Los Angeles et 500 km au sud-est de Sacramento, la capitale de l'tat. Elle se trouve au sud de la valle de San Joaquin et au nord des Tehachapi Mountains. Les amrindiens furent les premiers occupants de la Valle de San Joaquin, il y a quelques 8000 ans. En 1776 le missionnaire espagnol Pre Francisco Garcs fut le premier europen atteindre cette rgion. En 1851 de l'or fut dcouvert dans la Kern River, et en 1865 la premire dcouverte du ptrole fut faite dans la valle. Les colonies s'agrandirent et la zone fut bientt connue sous le nom de "Colonel Baker's field," d'aprs le nom d'un des colons locaux. Lorsque celui-ci se vit confier la tche de constituer un village, le nom officiel de celui-ci fut "Bakersfield." Le hameau continua prosprer et atteignit la population d' peu prs 300 habitants en 1869, de 800 en 1871. Les inondations de 1867 et 1893 et les incendies de 1889 et 1919 ne renversrent pas cette tendance.
